Principle
The Société Monégasque d’Assainissement (SMA) collects Principality residents’ bulky waste items free of charge.
Recyclable waste
The Principality has around 50 drop-off points at street level and underground, where waste can be sorted into different containers:
- Green for glass
- Yellow for packaging and paper
You can find all the information on recycling in the Principality on the Société Monégasque d'Assainissement (SMA)website.
Bulky waste
Collection of bulky waste is available for free from Monday to Friday. Call the S.M.A. switchboard on (+377) 92 05 75 16 to arrange an appointment.
You can find all the information on collection of bulky waste on the Société Monégasque d'Assainissement (SMA)website.
Household hazardous waste
Household hazardous waste (HHW) is waste which poses a danger to human health and the environment. Such waste is subject to special treatment and cannot, under any circumstances, be collected with normal household waste.
Bulbs and fluorescent lights
This logo displayed on bulbs or fluorescent lights means that they should not be thrown in the bin with household waste. Products which do not have this logo, such as filament or halogen bulbs, can go in the bin.
Batteries and rechargeable batteries
Batteries contain large quantities of heavy metals (mercury, zinc, lead, cadmium). These heavy metals pose a danger to health and the environment. A discarded watch battery can contaminate one square metre of ground and 1,000 square metres of water for 50 years.
This kind of waste is easy to recycle: current technology allows all of the materials which make up the battery or rechargeable battery to be recovered, including heavy metals.
Other types of hazardous waste
- Vehicle oils and waste
- Office waste (printer cartridges, electronic, IT or telephone equipment)
- Small discarded home appliances
- X-rays
- Fire extinguishers
- DIY waste (paint pots, rags and soiled materials, non-chlorinated solvents, aerosols, toxic chemical products, etc.)
