Understanding the process
All registrations are valid for a limited period, until 31 December of the current year, with the exception of new registrations made between 1 October and 31 December, which are valid until 31 December of the following year. The date of validity is stated on the registration certificate and on the sticker affixed to the registration plate.
Registration may be renewed each year, thereby extending its validity for one year. Renewal is due if the vehicle is still registered on 1st January.
The car sticker can be renewed:
- By individuals domiciled in Monaco who can provide proof of a valid ID, either a national identity card (failing this, a national passport with proof of address, gas or electricity bill from the SMEG, rental agreement), either a residence permit
- By individuals who own property in their own name or has a lease for rented accommodation in the Principality, and a parking permit
- For professional use or when assigning a vehicle for professional use by staff, individuals or legal entities who are authorised to undertake and are currently undertaking a professional, commercial or industrial activity, with the exclusion of non-trading real estate companies
All owners of registered vehicles receive an invoice at the beginning of October inviting them to renew their car sticker for the following year.
This invoice can be paid as soon as it is received and must be settled before 31 December of the current year.
Stickers are free for all electric vehicles; however, an invoice for €0 will nonetheless be sent to owners to check that they still own the relevant vehicles and that they wish to renew the stickers, which they should confirm by returning the appropriate slip.
Invoices and stickers are only sent by post, and letters will not be subject to tracking under temporary or permanent redirection instructions.
If no payment is registered by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office by 31 December, a late payment penalty per vehicle, the amount of which is set by Ministerial Decree, is payable from 1 January of the following year. In this case, a letter giving formal notice of payment for the renewal of registration, within one month before the date of the end of the sticker renewal period, will be sent by registered post with acknowledgement of receipt.
If payment is not made (or, in the case of electric vehicles, confirmation that the sticker should be renewed is not received) the vehicle will be removed from the registration file and will no longer be authorised to circulate on the public highway.
Reimbursement of fees paid may be requested when a vehicle is removed from the number plate database (sale, transfer, destruction, withdrawal) before 31 December of the current year or where payment to renew the sticker has already been made in accordance with the procedures set out in How to request reimbursement
There is a fee associated with this service - Please see
