An internship is a period of practical training as part of a study programme. It provides students with an opportunity to put into practice the theoretical knowledge taught in class, and allows them to gain genuine work experience.
Understanding the process
Any internship carried out as part of a post-secondary education programme must meet the conditions of Act no. 1.569 of 12 December 2024 pertaining to internships in professional environments and is subject to a request for approval beforehand to the Employment Office by the host organisation.
Internships undertaken under the following circumstances are excluded from the scope of this legislation and the ensuing obligations:
- As part of secondary studies
- As part of training to enter the medical professions
- Within national or municipal government departments
- As part of preparations to enter professions regulated by specific legislation (e.g. lawyer, chartered accountant, etc.)
If the internship does not meet the requirements of the Act, the trainee is considered to be an employee and the host organisation is subject to the regulations on recruiting employees: consult the procedure "How to recruit staff"
For further information, consult the factsheet: "Internships"
Details of the procedure for declaring an internship to the Employment Office can be found below.
You can also consult the following document:
The educational institution must send you an internship agreement, which must be approved and signed by you, the school, and the trainee.
In addition to a copy of the internship agreement, you will need to provide:
- A copy of the trainee’s identification in the case of European Economic Area nationals
- A copy of the trainee’s Monegasque or French residence permit in the case of non- European Economic Area nationals
You can submit your specific request for approval in advance using the dedicated online service.
Once you have made your declaration, you will receive a response by email.
You should send all documents by post to the Employment Office at least 15 days before the internship start date.
The Employment Office will send you an acknowledgement of receipt, stating whether the internship has been approved, rejected or whether you need to provide additional information to allow your application to be considered.
